Story

Set in the Dagdan Empire (south of Fodlan), a prosperous, Mediterranean-inspired land ruled by gods with its capital in the bustling city of Dagsion. It opens in a grim future amid the revival of the demon god Balor.
The progenitor god Sothis and the goddess of fate Fortuna send a customizable avatar (default name Eshmel, also called the Savior or Pale Raven) 5 years into the past to ensure the survival of 4 key warriors - the Flame Lords - so they can help avert catastrophe.
These 4 protagonists compete in the Heroic Games, a grand tournament in Dagsion where the winner receives a single wish.
Cai: A young fighter from a peaceful village trying to free his falsely imprisoned father.
Dietrich: A ruthless swordsman (with Fodlan ties) obsessed with seeking stronger opponents.
Theodora: A warrior queen from Saramis seeking to right historical injustices for her people.
Leda: A dancer/musician driven by revenge against her father’s killer.

Game Play

The structure is one of the game's boldest innovations.
Instead of fully separate routes you replay from the start, you experience multiple perspectives in a single large playthrough across 3 acts.
Part 1 focuses on the tournament and each Flame Lord's personal story and recruitment.
Part 2 escalates into larger conflict (with Theodora often central).
Part 3 brings the threads together for a climactic confrontation against Balor, with your accumulated allies and progress carrying forward.
You can switch between Flame Lords, complete their paths in any order, or even rush the endgame early (though it's not recommended).
Timelines and events interweave cleverly; seeing the same events or characters from different angles deepens the narrative without requiring four full separate campaigns.
Themes of family, destiny, change, obsession, and choice run through the stories. The blend of ancient-empire aesthetics, high fantasy, divine intervention, and subtle sci-fi/time elements feels fresh for the series. Supporting characters are strong and memorable, with excellent voice acting and support conversations that still form the emotional core of Fire Emblem. The narrative rewards thorough play -each path enriches the others - and builds to an epic payoff.

Combat
Combat remains the star. Traditional grid-based Matches (especially the arena tournament fights and major story maps) iterate successfully on Three Houses and Engage.
Weapon types, classes (beginner/specialty/advanced with certifications), combat arts, positioning, and tactical puzzles shine.
New Blaze Arts - powerful abilities unique to key characters that cost HP and can grant temporary boosts or map-altering effects (with risks of overuse) - add meaningful risk-reward. Drake's Treasures (cursed items) and a pantheon of gods who grant Blessings further expand options. Battles are frequently described as some of the best-designed in the series: creative objectives, strong map design, and scenarios that demand flexible thinking rather than pure unit power.
Outside the arena, a large world map supports exploration, skirmishes, side quests, resource gathering, and dungeons. Dungeons use real-time navigation with a party and switch to a simpler party-based Clash system (shared HP bars, menu-driven attacks with link/combo elements, inspired by older RPGs or Echoes). Clashes keep dungeon crawling from bogging down but are widely seen as the weakest combat mode - functional and fast but less engaging than the grid battles.
Between battles, Dagsion serves as a rich hub for shopping, training, recruiting, meals, gifts, theater, and temple services (for god Blessings).
Time management is key: actions advance a calendar toward tournament matches, so you can't endlessly grind without consequence. Renown (tied to Flame Lord-specific quests) and Support ranks gate recruitment. Quality-of-life features help with the scale (experience boosts, the ability to skip or accelerate certain sections on later runs, limited rewinds).
Classes, weapons (including some unconventional options), and unit building offer deep customization.
The result is a highly flexible experience. Newcomers can enjoy a satisfying single-path playthrough, while veterans can dive deep into optimization, multi-path mastery, and hard modes. Playtime easily exceeds 100 hours for a thorough run.
As a Switch 2 title, it is the best-looking and best-sounding Fire Emblem to date, with detailed character art (Kurahana's style evolving nicely for the more vibrant, diverse setting), strong animations, and an orchestral score that blends Mediterranean, flamenco, and ancient/fantastical motifs for a distinct identity from Three Houses. The setting feels exotic and lively compared to more rigid prior worlds.

🧠 Verdict

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is a triumphant, essential entry that builds on the best of Three Houses (narrative depth, social systems, world-building) and Engage (refined combat) while adding genuine innovation in structure and systems.
It is dense, deep, and highly replayable, rewarding investment with one of the series' most satisfying epics.
Minor friction around secondary systems and the potential for overload keep it from absolute perfection for everyone, but for tactical RPG fans and Fire Emblem players, it is a new high-water mark and one of the strongest Switch 2 exclusives at launch.
If you loved Three Houses for its characters and routes, or pure strategy entries for the battles, this is a must-play.
Budget serious time - you'll want to weave through all of it.
