Fatal Frame Mask of Lunar Eclipse a tried and old formula
Genre: Survival Horror
Mode: Single Player
Mask of Lunar Eclipse aka Project Zero marks the 4th iteration of the Fatal Frame series. However being a remaster of the old Nintendo Wii game.
Though we did hope to have a remake rather than another 4th remake, our hopes of playing this scary franchise was not dashed.
Model of Mayu has been remodeled so your constant gleaming at her won't be tiring to your eyes.
However, other than that only slight enhancements of visual lightings and more fluid cut-scene animations are made. The textures mostly remain untouched.
The game presents itself in traditional movement mechanics and lacks of fluid feel of movement and controls when you are traversing or escaping from ghosts that are swarming at you.
The obscura camera which you pick up to capture ghosts and deal fatal damage to them can lend itself feel slow and clunky to use and there's no option to upgrade it.
The flash part is too long and causes eye glare tiredness if you play for prolonged periods.
The saving grace is the presentation and storyline where you need to pick up hidden pieces of written notes that reveals about the story progressively.

Game Play
If you've played this game before, the movements and mechanics will be very familiar and needs no introduction.
You use your left control sticks to move around and the right stick to aim at where you want to move towards and is also where your line of sight is with the narrow torch light view.
What's new here is that you can choose from 4 protagonists, one of them a male journalist to learn about their stories and their childhood related to the island where all the mystery evolved.
Discovery items
Pick up some japanese dolls which will reward you with useful upgrades or powerful spells which you can use to protect yourself or increase your damage against the wraiths.
The cut-scenes are the more engaging part of the game and have been improved with better models, ambience and fluid animations.
There isn't much to say about the improvements of in-game visuals as it's pretty much reused graphics and 3d models.
But apart from that, the movements feel wonky and cumbersome game play mechanics are inherited from the original game.

Story
"If no one remembers it, does that mean it never happened?"
Rogetsu Kagura is a festival held once every ten years on Rogetsu Isle in southern Japan. During the festival, five girls mysteriously disappeared. The girls were rescued by a detective, but all of their memories were lost.
One of the girls that disappeared mysteriously, Ruka Mizunaki, had a faint memory of a single melody…
- Girls playing instruments surrounded by masked people, and a masked woman dancing in the moonlight as though possessed. -

The melody repeats and hastens... and then the memory ends abruptly.
What happened that day...?
Ruka has lived with that thought in her mind ever since.
Ten years later, two of the girls that mysteriously disappeared were killed one after another.
They were found with their faces covered, in a tragic demeanor. Determined to solve the mystery of their friends' deaths, the remaining girls, Misaki and Madoka, agree to travel to Rogetsu Isle.

Ruka decides to follow them to the island. Will they find out what lies beyond their lost memories?
